2008 Candidates
We have a chance to gain as many as nine Senate seats next year and significantly increase our slim, one vote majority. Imagine what a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate would mean for our families, our environment, our working people, and those who want to see America lead the world from a position of moral strength.
Take a look into the future and read about some of our terrific 2008 Senate candidates today!
Colorado - Mark Udall Mark Udall has served in the House of Representatives since 1999, representing Colorado's 2nd congressional district. Mark knows how to work with others to get things done on critical issues, including protecting our environment. He was a key player in passing bipartisan legislation to turn Rocky Flats into a wildlife refuge and to protect many natural areas of Colorado. Mark has also been a strong proponent of government reform and transparency. He cosponsored the "Earmark Transparency and Accountability Act" to ensure that the American people know how their tax dollars are being spent. Idaho - Larry LaRocco Larry Craig has announced his retirement from the Senate in 2008. Idaho's Senate seat will be open in 2008, presenting a great opportunity for us to build on our slim Democratic margin in the Senate. As of now, former Congressman Larry LaRocco is the only official challenger in this race. Click here to support the winner of the Democratic primary today!
Kentucky - No official challengers Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, has repeatedly rubber-stamped President Bush's failed policy in Iraq, as well as his failed domestic policies here at home. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee cited a poll showing that more than half of Kentucky voters are unhappy with Senator McConnell's position on the occupation of Iraq. It's time to bring change to Kentucky -- and with several Democrats considering a challenge of McConnell, we can encourage them to run by showing our support for the eventual nominee. Maine - Congressman Tom Allen Susan Collins, like many other Republicans in the Senate, has stood by the Bush Administration's disastrous policies at home and abroad. Instead, the people of Maine deserve a Senator who will stand up for them -- and for all Americans. Congressman Tom Allen is the current front-runner in the Democratic primary. Minnesota - Al Franken and Mike Ciresi According to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Senator Coleman has voted with President Bush 90% of the time. His unwavering support of the President's war in Iraq threatens his ability to hold onto his seat, and already Al Franken and Mike Ciresi are building strong support for their Democratic campaigns across Minnesota. New Hampshire - Jeanne Shaheen and Jay Buckey New Hampshire is starting to lean blue, giving us a chance to elect another Democrat to the Senate in 2008. Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen and Jay Buckey entered the race against incumbent Republican Senator John Sununu, one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents next year. I hope you'll join me in showing your support by donating to the winner of New Hampshire's Democratic primary today!
New Mexico - Tom Udall To the surprise of many, Senator Pete Domenici announced his retirement from the Senate in 2008. We already have promising candidates running for the Democratic nomination, notably Congressman Tom Udall, facing off against the winner of the Republican primary between Rep. Heather Wilson and Rep. Steve Pearce. Donate to the Democratic nominee in New Mexico by clicking here today!
Oregon - Jeff Merkley and Steve Novick Gordon Smith's vulnerability as a conservative Senator in a blue state sets the perfect stage for a Democratic win in 2008. Senator Smith has stood by Bush's misguided war in Iraq, and it's time that voters in Oregon have someone who will stand up for their state. The Democratic primary race is already starting to heat up, with Oregon Speaker of the House Jeff Merkley and the state's former Department of Justice Attorney Steve Novick campaigning across the state. Virginia - Mark Warner Mark Warner is the former Governor of Virginia and, with the retirement of Republican Senator John Warner, is now running for U.S. Senate. Mark began his term as Governor in 2002, inheriting $6 billion in budget shortfalls. He used his business background and management skills to fix many of the state's budget problems and generated a budget surplus. Governor Warner used the surplus to reinvest in K-12 education and the state's public higher education system.
